It’s no secret that our world is increasingly digitized and that children are growing up in a more virtual environment than ever before. With the rise of social media, online gaming, and other digital platforms, it’s hardly surprising that Sony and Lego should invest in Epic Games to build a space in the metaverse specifically for kids.
There are obvious advantages to this – children can interact with each other from anywhere in the world without leaving their homes, which is great for shy or introverted kids who might find it difficult to make friends offline. It also provides a safe environment for them to explore their creativity and imagination without any risk of harm.
However, there are also some potential downsides to consider. For example, companies like Sony and Lego will be able to track everything children do within these digital spaces and use that data to target them with advertising (which may not always be appropriate).
There’s also the danger of addiction – if kids spend too much time in these virtual worlds then they could start neglecting real-world relationships or activities. Overall though, I think the positives outweigh the negatives when it comes.

What kind of products could Lego sell inside a metaverse?
There are many potential products that Lego could sell inside a metaverse, ranging from virtual building blocks and mini-figures to digital environments and experiences. The possibilities are limited only by the creativity of the Lego team. Some potential products include :
- Virtual Lego sets that can be built and customized within the metaverse environment. These could be themed sets, such as those based on popular movies or tv shows, or more general ones that allow for greater creative freedom.
- Minifigures that inhabit the metaverse can be used to populate user-created worlds. Again, these could be licensed characters from media properties or original creations designed by Lego themselves.
- “Lego Dimensions” style packs add new locations, objects, and NPCs to the game world for players to interact with.
- Unique ornamental items and clothing that can personalize avatars within the metaverse
